Course Name: Honors Japanese IV Type of Course: Elective Course
Available to: 10th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Honors Japanese III( 80 %+)
Description: This course enhances level three skills in Japanese and provides further opportunities to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an integrated way. Provides continued language development through exploration of familiar and unfamiliar topics and provides opportunities for a broader and more extensive understanding of Japanese culture. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

Available to: 11th- 12th grade Prerequisites: Honors Japanese IV( 80 %+) OR Teacher Rec.
Description: This is an academically rigorous course emphasizing communication( understanding and being understood by others) by applying the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentation modes of communication in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Japanese Language and Culture course engages students in the exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of social, political, and educational issues as well as more traditional topics. By earning a 4 or 5 on the AP exam, students will earn a Biliteracy seal on their diploma. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

Course Name: Native Speakers Spanish I Type of Course: Elective Course Available to: 9th- 12th grade
Prerequisites: Native Spanish speaker
Description: This course is designed for heritage learners of Spanish, this course can accommodate students from a wide range of backgrounds, from those who are minimally functional( can comprehend Spanish but are not able to speak fluently, read or write) to those who are more proficient and / or literate in Spanish. This course focuses on the development of communicative competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening and viewing, as well as on understanding Hispanic cultures and issues of identity of heritage speakers of Spanish in the United States. Students will also develop an awareness and understanding of Hispanic cultures, including language variation, customs, geography, history, and current events.
