Housing
Safe, stable, and affordable housing provides a critical foundation for health and wellbeing. Severe housing problems, which include housing with overcrowding, high housing costs, lack of kitchen facilities, or lack of plumbing facilities, can cause significant damage to an individual’ s or family’ s health. For example, these problems can contribute to infectious disease risk from poor sanitary conditions. Poor housing conditions may also be a barrier to nutritious home-cooked meals, can raise one’ s risk for unintentional injury at home, and can even increase one’ s risk of chronic disease through exposure to hazards such as mold growth and lead paint. 10
As seen in Figure 13, 17.2 % of households in Washoe County have severe housing problems. Households in Washoe are less likely to have these problems than households across Nevada, broadly( 19.3 %).
