When families must spend a large portion of their income on housing, they may not have enough money to pay for things like healthy foods or healthcare. This is linked to increased stress, mental health problems, and an increased risk of disease. 11
Although there are many factors which contribute to individuals’ household budgets, a common target which has been adopted by Healthy People 2030 to reduce the financial burden of housing is to spend 30 % or less of one’ s household income on housing. 12 As seen in Figure 14, half of renters in Washoe County( 50.5 %) spend 30 % or more of their income on rent. This rate is lower than the Nevada statewide rate( 54.3 %).
