This course introduces students to the self-understanding, knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to develop cultural competence as a practicing counselor. Topics include: 1) consideration of how social, historical, and cultural contexts inform the counseling dynamic, 2) the contributions and impact of both counselor and client identities on the counseling process, and 3) how culturally biased attitudes and assumptions influence the provision of mental health services. Emphasis is placed on counselors’ ethical responsibility to engage in ongoing reflexive practice related to cultural competency, as well as demonstrating a commitment to social justice |
