Ready to respond to an emergency, the St. Croix Valley is protected by staff firefighters and volunteers in multiple local departments.
The Stillwater Fire Department, led by Chief Stuart Glaser, has protected the Birthplace of Minnesota since 1872.
The department is configured as a combination department with fulltime staff as well as volunteer, paidon-call staff, that protects 53 square miles. The department provides a variety of services in addition to fire suppression, including technical rescue, advanced first aid, fire prevention education, and emergency preparedness.
The Bayport Fire Department has served the St. Croix Valley since 1888. The paid-on-call volunteer fire department, headed by Chief Allen Eisinger, covers an area of about 31 square miles, including Bayport, Baytown Township, Oak Park Heights, and West Lakeland Township.
The Lake Elmo Fire Department, led by Chief Dustin Kalis, recently moved from two separate fire stations into one combined station.
The Lower St. Croix Valley Fire Department was formed in 1972, dissolving the departments of Afton and Lake St. Croix Beach to serve 25 square miles encompassing Afton, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Croix Beach, and St. Marys Point. Headed by Chief James Stanley are two assistant chiefs and 27 paid on-call employees.
Fire departments in the valley also find the time to engage in public events. From fire safety education weeks, to open houses where kids can climb in the trucks, participation in parades, and more, people can often feel the warm presence of local firefighters.
