Sustainability in Action: A Global Perspective
In July 2024, Reagan National Airport became the fi rst U. S. airport to implement BiKeep, a smart parking system that provides secure storage for personal bicycles and scooters alongside integrated charging for e-bikes and e-scooters. The program is offered free of charge to passengers and employees, supporting the use of low-emissions transportation options for commuting and airport access.
Across Terminals 1 and 2, as well as Garage 2 and the South Metro Plaza, the Airports Authority has deployed a network of 65 docks, including bike racks and scooter stations equipped with self-locking and charging capabilities. A bike repair station is also available in Garage 2 to support basic maintenance needs.
Since implementation, the BiKeep system has seen strong and consistent utilization. In 2025 alone, users recorded more than 10,000 parking sessions and over 127,000 hours of total parking time, with repeat users averaging nearly 30 sessions each. These usage patterns translate into measurable environmental benefi ts: an estimated 52,000 miles of avoided vehicle travel and approximately 46,800 pounds of avoided CO2 emissions.
Additional benefi ts include an estimated savings of 2,000 gallons in reduced fuel consumption and broader air quality improvements. User feedback also has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the system’ s ease of use, reliability and value to airport employees and travelers.
In addition to encouraging sustainable transportation, the BiKeep system enhances safety by relocating charging of e-bikes and scooters from indoor spaces to designated outdoor infrastructure, reducing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Together, these benefi ts support the Airports Authority’ s efforts to expand multimodal access, improve the employee experience and reduce transportation-related emissions.
Employee Commuting Program
The Airports Authority continues to expand its employee commuting program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with single-occupancy vehicle travel while improving the overall employee experience. Staff are eligible for monthly commuter benefi ts in lieu of parking subsidies when they choose public transit as a lower-emission transportation option. These incentives are complemented by investments in infrastructure like secure bike and scooter storage, making active transportation a more viable option for employees at both airports.
At Dulles International Airport, the Airports Authority partners with local organizations, including Loudoun County’ s commuter services programs, to expand access to ridesharing and regional transit connections for employees. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce commuting-related emissions, alleviate roadway congestion and enhance accessibility to the airport workforce.
In recognition of these efforts, the Airports Authority was named to the 2025 Best Workplaces for Commuters list, a national designation that highlights employers providing exceptional commuting programs and choices. During a June 26 Committee for Dulles luncheon, the Authority was presented with a signed resolution recognizing this achievement, underscoring the organization’ s leadership in advancing sustainable commuting practices across its operations.
BiKeep demonstrates how thoughtful infrastructure can turn everyday choices into meaningful impact, making sustainable commuting more accessible, safer and seamlessly integrated into the airport experience.
