Water Stewardship
Given the scale and complexity of airport environments, responsible water management is essential to maintaining operational resilience and protecting the Potomac River watershed. Through targeted infrastructure investments, data-driven monitoring and innovative recovery programs, the Airports Authority is advancing a proactive strategy that integrates water effi ciency with water quality protection, ensuring Airports Authority operations support environmental sustainability and long-term system performance.
Water Use and Efficiency
In parallel, the Airports Authority works closely with regional partners, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Virginia Department of Transportation, to promote transit-oriented access. Reagan National Airport is directly served by the National Capital Region’ s Metrorail public transit system and regional bus networks, reinforcing its role as one of the most multimodal-accessible airports in the country.
As part of its Sustainability Plan, the Airports Authority continues to advance water effi ciency initiatives across its facilities. Low-fl ow fi xtures are installed in many high-use areas, including restrooms, and additional opportunities are being evaluated for the use of smart metering systems and other data-driven approaches. These efforts support long-term reductions in indoor and outdoor water use.
The Airports Authority strives to maximize the collection of aircraft deicing fl uid( ADF) used to maintain safe operations during winter weather events. As part of this effort, the Airports Authority has implemented specialized systems to collect, store, and recycle or properly dispose of recovered ADF in a manner that helps prevent contamination of stormwater systems and local waterways. In 2025, nearly 143,000 gallons of propylene-glycol-based ADF were recovered across both airports, supporting regional water quality protection while enhancing the sustainability of airport operations.
Promoting Sustainable Mobility
Positioned along the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail and adjacent to the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, Reagan National Airport remains one of the most accessible airports in the United States for pedestrians and cyclists. The trail runs directly alongside the airport and includes dedicated connections to airport property, enabling seamless access for travelers and employees arriving by foot, bicycle or micromobility devices.
The airport enhances this accessibility through infrastructure investments. On-site amenities include a Capital Bikeshare station, one of the fi rst at a major U. S. airport, as well as free self-service smart bike and scooter parking facilities equipped with charging capabilities and a bike repair station. These features support a growing shift toward low-carbon commuting and multimodal access. Looking ahead, Arlington County is advancing a foot bridge called the Crystal City to Reagan National Airport Multimodal Connection project, which will provide a safer, more direct link for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users between Crystal City, regional rail and the airport terminals.
In 2025, the number of trips originating and ending at the Reagan National Capital Bikeshare station exceeded 5,000, a fi gure that does not account for the signifi cant share of dockless trips taken with Capital Bikeshare e-bikes that continue to grow in popularity.
