Promoting Healthcare Careers
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital | Promoting Healthcare Careers
Fostering healthcare careers
Community Health Needs Assessment indicated an opportunity to improve awareness for the broad variety of healthcare careers . Improving awareness and exposure to these careers , specifically with at-risk youth , may lead to improved socioeconomic futures for families .
Title 1 school program
Throughout the school year , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosted students enrolled in health , science and technology programs at Title 1 schools . Title 1 funding is available to schools with at least 40 % of their students meeting lowincome criteria established by the federal poverty census . The funding is designed to assist schools in meeting the educational goals of low-income students .
Many of the students who have participated in this eight-week program have gone on to pursue healthcare careers . In fact , some of these students are now a member of our Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital team . Of those who have participated , Garland Independent School District reported that more than 250 students who completed post-high school education are in the process to pursue healthcare careers .
STEM Goes Red
As a part of the STEM Goes Red project of the American Heart Association , students from all over the Metroplex joined various organizations for presentations on science , technology , engineering , and math ( STEM ) careers . STEM Goes Red gives students access to local STEM employers and experts . Program attendees gain first-hand experience , knowledge and a platform to ask questions of professionals in a STEM career .
For several years , Dallas County students participated in either in-person or virtual presentations where students were able to hear from hospital staff about career opportunities and have an interactive discussion with experts in their respective specialties .
