Extracorporeal life support
Baylor University Medical Center is one of the busiest programs in the nation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation , or ECMO . This labor-intensive treatment is amplified by the multidisciplinary team of specialists with extensive training in this procedure . The partnered approach between cardiovascular surgery , cardiology , vascular surgery , pulmonology , and critical care increases the quality of care of these acute patients backed by ECMO nurses and perfusionists .

Patients served since inception
The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization ( ELSO ) awarded Baylor Dallas their second consecutive Platinum designation — one of only 34 adult facilities in the United States to earn the prestigious honor . The program at Baylor Dallas is in its 12th year and has 22 ECMO machines and nine dedicated ICU beds in the ECMO unit . The Platinum recognition is based on patient volume — Baylor Dallas has supported more than 1,500 patients with ECMO — and , more importantly , outcomes and quality improvement .
ECMO survivor ’ s reunion
In May 2024 , nearly 200 patients and family members returned to the Dallas campus to celebrate with the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ( ECMO ) team . The recent ECMO survivor ’ s reunion gave patients and Baylor Dallas staff the opportunity to reunite , share experiences and celebrate this life-preserving program . The event featured speakers and the presentation of certificates to the ECMO survivors in front of a record-breaking audience .
