Coronary artery bypass grafts , or CABG , may be routine for many cardiac surgery programs , but few are consistently recognized on a national scale for their quality metrics . The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Baylor Dallas has once again received 3-Stars — the highest possible rating — for isolated coronary artery bypass graft procedures by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons ( STS ). This is the sixth consecutive 3-Star rating by STS , placing Baylor Dallas in the top 20 % in the nation . The program was also recognized by U . S . Mitral valve surgery
Cardiac surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center treat both degenerative mitral valve disease as well as functional mitral valve conditions . A multidisciplinary team reviews each patient with severe valvular disease to determine the best treatment option .
Performed as an open heart surgery or minimally invasive , the cardiac surgery team is equipped to perform both mitral valve replacements and repairs . Patients eligible for a mitral valve replacement may recieve a mechanical or biological tissue valve or may have a valve-in-valve procedure through the Center for Valve Disorders . For some patients , mitral valve repair reduces the need for blood thinners and complications of prosthetic valves . Various studies have indicated early mitral valve repair leads to better outcomes for symptoms , better long-term patient survival , better preservation of heart function , lower risk of complications , and usually eliminates the need for longterm use of anticoagulants .
