Emissions Inventory
Greenhouse Gas Carbon Footprints
The Airports Authority prepared greenhouse gas( GHG) carbon footprints for 2021 – 2024 at Dulles International and Reagan National Airports to measure emissions from operations under its control, track progress toward sustainability goals, and identify opportunities for future reductions. These inventories support the implementation of the Authority’ s 2020 Sustainability Plan, enabling benchmarking, transparency, and strategic investment in lower-emission technologies. These inventories include Scope 1 emissions – direct emissions from sources such as boilers, generators, Authority-owned vehicles, and airport-controlled processes like fi re suppression and deicing, and Scope 2 emissions – which result from electricity purchased from the grid.

Promoting Sustainable Mobility
Uniquely situated on the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail and connected to the Arlington, Virginia, neighborhood of Crystal City, Reagan National Airport is one of the most pedestrian and bicycle-accessible airports in the country for the traveling public and employees alike. In 2024, utilization of the Reagan National Capital Bikeshare Station reached an all-time high with over 5,000 trips, representing a 32 % increase over 2023 ridership. It is important to note that these fi gures do not refl ect dockless trips taken with Capital Bikeshare-E-bikes, which have sharply increased in popularity in 2024.
The Airports Authority partners with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Virginia Department of Transportation in promoting the utilization of public transportation.
Employee Commuting Program
776,362 passengers arriving at Dulles International via Metro; 852,096 leaving Dulles International via Metro;
1,628,458 total rides
1,804,355 passengers arriving at Reagan National via Metro; 2,094,006 passengers leaving Reagan National via Metro;
3,898,361 total rides
The Airports Authority offers monthly commuter benefi ts in lieu of parking subsidies for employees who arrive at work via mass transit, avoiding the GHG emissions from commuting to the offi ce with a personal vehicle. Moreover, the Airports Authority encourages the adoption of alternative transportation options by facilitating commuter rideshare pools and offering secure storage for personal bikes and scooters at Reagan National airport.
