Dulles Solar Energy Facility Update Project Highlights:
To further its global position of leadership in sustainability, the Airports Authority will host one of the world’ s largest airport-located solar and battery storage facilities through a partnership with Dominion Energy. Dominion is installing the solar facility on approximately 835 acres of underutilized property in the southwest corner of Dulles under a long-term sublease with the Airports Authority.
Through a fi rst-of-its-kind lease agreement, Dominion will be providing the Airports Authority with in-kind contributions that will advance renewable energy and vehicle fl eet electrifi cation goals. In lieu of annual lease payments to the Airports Authority, Dominion will develop two 1-MW solar carports that will partially power Dulles facilities, and provide 18 electric transit buses, 50 electric fl eet vehicles, and electric vehicle charging stations at Dulles International and Reagan National facilities.
Construction on the Dulles Solar Energy Facility began in November 2023. Site preparation activities and racking system installation were advanced in 2024 and are currently ahead of schedule. The target completion date for the project is in the fall of 2026, with the array expected to be active by the end of 2026.
