Encouragement Awards

Primary
Awarded to highly commended students who show particular promise and are encouraged to pursue further development
David Kingma , McAuley Catholic Central School , Radio Controlled Model Aeroplane Material Testing
David tested the strength of corflute and foam to determine the best possible material model aircraft construction . From his results , he determined foam to be the better material even though it wasn ’ t quite as strong as the corflute it is lighter and has a better strength-to-weight ratio .
Gregory Samokhin , Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School , Space Exploration & Building Sustainable Rockets
Gregory investigated how well rockets made from recyclable materials fly by measuring the rocket ' s altitude with manual and digital altimeters . His results showed a more powerful engine and / or a lighter model enabled the rockets to fly higher and faster . Gregory also determined 3 fins were most effective for aerodynamics .
Scarlett Waples , PLC Sydney , Why Won ' t the Cellos Stay in Tune ?
Scarlett plays the cello and investigated what would be the best temperature to store cellos so they remain in tune . With her father , she constructed 5 cellos with a single E string . Scarlett varied the temperature of the room for each test . Her results showed an increase in temperature lowered the pitch and a decrease in temperature increased the pitch .
