GETTING TO KNOW JACK BOVAY
Those of us who live in Lexington / Rockbridge County are often amazed at the accomplishments , background , experience , and success of our neighbors . That is most certainly the case with Jack Bovay , President of LGCC . Jack graduated from W & L in 1979 with a degree in Business Administration & Accounting . He earned a Law Degree from the University of Florida in 1982 , holds an LL . M . in Taxation and is a Florida licensed CPA . He is a partner with the Salter Feiber law firm in Gainesville , Florida . His practice focuses on estate planning and asset protection for high-net worth individuals and families , business succession planning and fiduciary litigation . He is Board Certified in both Tax Law and Wills , Trusts and Estates Law . He is an Emeritus Trustee of the University of Florida College of Law and founder / vice chair of the Florida Tax Institute Continuing Education program . He is a former trustee of the W & L Alumni Board and is currently a visiting professor of taxation at W & L .
Jack ’ s law partners allow him to do what he enjoys doing – estate tax planning and sell side transactions for closely held businesses . One family he represents is negotiating with a university to develop a world class golf facility , so there is a lot of crossover between what he does for a living and what our club is trying to accomplish in partnership with W & L . He recalls , with fondness , the late Bill Russell ’ s enthusiasm for the golf course project with W & L and says it is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Bill , Thom Gill and Jason Melvin as we continue that effort . That said , Jack is intent on the club moving , planning for our future , regardless of whether a deal with W & L comes to fruition ; realistic planning with a strong dose of optimism .
Jack and his wife , Leslie , purchased property at Buffalo Forge in 1994 and fell in love with Rockbridge County with dreams of making it their permanent home . They did so five years ago and one of the first things they did was join LGCC . I asked Jack why they joined ? He said without hesitation “ because of Denny Garvis and Jake Burks .” Jack and Leslie met Denny and Jake while attending a club function where both introduced themselves and welcomed them . That made Leslie feel right at home , and they joined LGCC immediately . So here we are , fast forward five years , with Jack serving as President and Denny ’ s wife , Natalie , and Jake ’ s wife Bev , serving on the board . Even though he laughs when talking about this , he says he thinks of it frequently as the club strives to grow . He believes that LGCC ’ s success is based upon members reaching out to family , friends , and neighbors , encouraging them to join and become part of the LGCC family . He commented that while attending the recent Member Christmas Cocktail party , all one had to do was look around , see the staff in action , board and members interacting , to see the love they have for our club .
