Pickleball in the park

Temporary court open for play starting May 1

By ANNE SHEVLIN
Grab a paddle and balls , and head for the park ! Beginning May 1 , interested Charbonneau residents and their family members or guests can play pickleball on a temporary court , using the basketball court at Edith Green Park .
The park is located in the Country Club Estates neighborhood . A portable net will be installed that allows for the use of the area for either sport , and it will be striped for both games . Since the park is also used by dog lovers , a fence will be placed around the perimeter of the court , to keep balls in , and our furry friends out .
A number of Charbonneau residents are active pickleball players , and more are joining in on the fun . It is a paddle sport that combines the elements of tennis , badminton and ping-pong , using a paddle and plastic ball with holes . Equipment can be purchased for about $ 50 . It is a game that is appropriate for players of all ages and skill levels . Rules are simple , making it a great introductory sport . Pickleball is also a social activity , and very healthy for both mind and body .
The Charbonneau Country Club Board of Directors is currently evaluating the interest in the sport . If you have questions , contact the office or Anne Shevlin , CCC board director .

It ’ s time to regroup

Two steps forward , one step back ! Just as Oregon was getting so many of its senior citizens vaccinated , so they could look forward to enjoying life again , another surge comes along and our county ’ s status upgrades from moderate to high , once again curtailing our activities .
Plans to fly off to visit children and grandchildren we haven ’ t seen for well over a year , go back on

have 120 members and 103 attended the clinics . The PowerPoint presentation was so helpful with visuals and explanations . Chris Bensel , Charbonneau head pro , attended all six sessions . Chris comments , “ I am so impressed with the activities of the Niners and your efforts to improve pace of play and learning USGA rules ! Great job ladies !”
The Niners project of having murals painted on the course bathroom walls
hold and local celebrations grow tentative once again .
I would love to see Solo Sisters begin to gather again . For those of you who are new to Charbonneau and do not know about Solo Sisters , we are a fun , loving , energetic group of single women . We are card carrying members of AARP , therefore of a certain age group . Prior to the pandemic there were almost 50 wonderful women on our roster and we would gather monthly at an area restaurant for happy hour . We slowly expanded into bowling outings , Portland lunch safaris , game nights at the country club and other fun activities .

was well-received by everyone ! Please read our article in the next issue of the Villager , which will come out in June . The pictures are spectacular .
Two of the artists are our Niners , Bobbi Christiansen and Kim Warram . Bobbi ’ s mural is on the Red Course and Kim ’ s mural is on the Green Course . Both did the ladies restrooms . Be sure to peek in the men ’ s restrooms as well . Pat Tewell ’ s granddaughter , Cate Van Valin , 16 , painted the mural on the Yellow Course men ’ s bathroom . We are still looking for a mural to be painted in the men ’ s restroom on the Red Course .
the paper on the 10th of the month and you read it about three weeks later . A lot can change during those three weeks , but I am hoping Solo Sisters can be reborn and we can begin to meet again . If you are a single woman and would like to make new friends and do some fun things , please join us and get on our roster . Please send a request for membership to Deanna Morgan at deannamorgan @ gmail . com , and as easy as that , you can become a member . Our planning committee will be working with Charbonneau Country Club to see about snagging a place where , finally , we can meet and have a group hug — socially distanced of course ! See you soon !
