had just received the day before . Congratulations Jeff !
This season ’ s fifth hole-in-one was made by Jerry Zeller on Red No . 9 Saturday , April 10 . This is Jerry ’ s first hole-inone at the tender age of 88 . Congrats to Jerry and it just shows you are never too old when it comes to golf !
Rule of the month — ready golf
At Charbonneau , we are targeting to play each nine holes in one hour and 45 minutes or less . Often this will require playing “ ready golf ,” but all players have to act sensibly to ensure that playing in this manner does not endanger other players .
The term “ ready golf ” has been adopted by many as a catch-all phrase for a number of actions that separately and collectively can improve pace of play . There is no official definition of the term , but examples of “ ready golf ” in action are :
Hitting a shot in the fairway when safe to do so even if another player is further away from the hole .
Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait .
Hitting a tee shot when “ ready ” and not waiting for the person with the “ honor .”
Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else ’ s line .
Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker .
If your group falls behind , have players head to the next tee to tee off after they putt out .

BY CATHI MCLAIN
Artists aren ’ t the only ones who appreciate art
Years ago , I attended a productivity workshop that was supposed to provide participants with the tools we needed to
MCLAIN work efficiently
and better manage our time . The only phrase I took away from the meeting was “ I ’ m never more productive than when there ’ s something on my todo list that I don ’ t want to do .”
It has stayed with me all these years , because it was and still is , a perfect description of my form of procrastination . Today I managed to do laundry , clean the shower , take the dog to the park , fill out paperwork for upcoming doctor appointments and play a few games of Words with Friends . All because I couldn ’ t get started on this article .
But as I walked out of the laundry room into the hallway where a few of my mother ’ s paintings hang , I was reminded that we ’ ll soon celebrate Mother ’ s Day , and the month ’ s Villager theme gave me the prompt I needed .
The CCC office staff will be updating the Charbonneau Resident ’ s Directory , which includes helpful information about Charbonneau businesses , homeowner associations , architectural control policies and much more .
The deadline for making changes is May 19 .
The directory will be delivered sometime in June . If you have recently moved to Charbonneau , be sure to contact the CCC offi ce staff at 503-694-2300 to let them know how you would like to be listed in the directory .
We Specialize in All Things Glass
My mother painted off and on for as long as I can remember . I still have the wooden case that housed her oil paints , pallet and brushes , and the box of pastels , both covered in my toddler scribbles that she allowed to distract me so she could get in a little painting or drawing . After mom died in 2008 , I kept all of her supplies , thinking that maybe someday I ’ d give them a try . And in 2017 , I took a resort watercolor class and got hooked . I never expected to embrace art as much as I have , but mom ’ s creative genes were strong , and her art hanging on my walls constantly serves as inspiration . I suspect there are a few of you out there who also had artistic parents , or who loved to draw or paint before life and careers took over . In retirement , I ’ ve discovered there are no excuses for not doing what you love , and I ’ ve certainly followed in my mother ’ s footsteps in embracing my love for painting . It ’ s the one thing for which I never procrastinate .
As I frequently assert in these little articles , one doesn ’ t have to be an artist to appreciate art , as evidenced by the eclectic group of talented board members serving CAA . We have a painter , a sculptor , three photographers , a former CPA and attorney , a financial manager and management consultant , a meeting and event planner , and a real estate agent , directing the activities of our nonprofit organization . We welcome all skill sets , including non-artistic ones !
A variety of skill sets are required to host a successful Festival of the Arts , most of them not requiring any artistic talent . By the time this reaches your mailbox , the Festival Organizing Committee , led by John McLain , will have had their first meeting , and the nucleus of our plans for the 2021 Festival of the Arts will be underway . While we know that COVID-19 protocols can change , I continue to be optimistic that the festival will return to its usual home at the Charbonneau Country Club Nov . 5 , 6 and 7 . We will welcome more volunteers to join the committee very soon . Whether we go virtual or live , or some combination of both , the “ Call to Artists ” is still planned to go out in June .
The Great Pumpkin Project
Benjamin Mefford , our resident sculptor , reports that in addition to the earlier grant awarded by the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition , the project was just awarded an additional $ 6,000 by the city of Wilsonville . This new grant , sponsored by the Wilsonville Arts and Culture Council , will significantly help to move the project along . Ben also reports that he has ordered a block of granite from a California quarry that is 4 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet in size . He is eagerly awaiting the delivery of the stone . Once it is onsite , the work can begin in earnest and we will share photographic progress along the way .
To all you mothers out there , I wish you the best Mother ’ s Day . I envy those of you who have family nearby , and I hope you can celebrate safely and well . Our two children are both in Colorado and we are counting the days till our June road trip , when we will belatedly celebrate all the birthdays , holidays and Mother ’ s Days that we have missed during the past year and a half of “ staying home and staying safe .”
