Panels 4 to 6 on page 3 present women ' s choices of identity in the same expressive way . From graduation outfit to wedding dress and then from wedding dress to apron , the change from student - adult - wife - mother . The married protagonist thinks she has compromised enough , but then comes the pressure of childbirth . Here it can be linked to the second page , where the panel gets wider and wider the main character eventually runs out , and here the range is getting more and more compressed , representing a degree of loss of control over the life and self . Panel 6 shows the ‘ my ’ next generation , also a girl , who is also running , implying the beginning of a new cycle .
cooking was a necessity for women and so had taught ' me ' how to cook , not that it was a hobby that could be developed on a personal level , i . e . preparation for a future as a wife and mother . ‘ I ’, on the other hand , is frequently struggling with hobby and duties . Thus when ' I ' becomes the mother for the next generation , the passion for cooking is worn out under the gender expectations . What is shown in the third panel are the signs of the narrator as each role shifts . Starting with the wedding dress , the narrator ' s self has less and less room to exist and ends up being a different person from the one in the photograph
The way I wanted to present this should look like a flashback in a film , but my level of narrative struggled to achieve this . This page should have been the focus of the whole piece , but the early pages are a little too long , leading to some imbalance in narrative focus .
The fourth page is a transitional page and will not be described in detail .
The second to fourth panel on page 5 is the main point of this adaptation . I want to express under mother ' s point of view , she hopes her daughter not to live like her , that is , the sacrifice of self in return for the title of ' good wife ' ' good mother '. By associating cooking with a woman ' s responsibility , the narrator shows a strong resistance to cultural , social gender expectations . Furthermore , in the second panel I also wanted to show the connection between each generation ; ' my ' mother thought that
