And the expressions that mimic real photos are referenced from Fun Home . 2 The reason for the more realistic rather than abstract style is that I wanted to show as much of a connection to the real world as possible . Like my daughter in the story , I was also surprised when I first saw this photo at the energy and joy that my mother showed when she was young . The text part in the 3rd panel on the second page also expresses my interpretation of the transformation of female identity , that is , the narrator is no longer the same person as the young woman who was once in the photograph . This change does not refer to a natural change in appearance , but to a state of mind and an attitude towards life .

The final graduation outfit representing the end of the educational phase of life , are also gender-neutral , reflecting the narrator ' s step-by-step escape from ' specific female symbols ' as she grows up . In addition the facial expressions and movements are different in the three stages ; I wanted to show the narrator ' s confidence growing with age , specifically in the action of running . The level of running and the confidence on her face reflect the idea that the character once thought that ' growing up means being able to have all of yourself and decide your own future '.
Panel 4 to 6 on the second page are my interpretation of freedom as women grow up . Here I use panel as a metaphor for the restrictions of growing up , restrictions here are a subjective feeling . As one grows older and learns more about oneself , a subjective belief that one is able to escape the ' frame ' and have positive plans for the future . I have drawn three different
The panel 1-2 on page 3 continues the stages of growth . This page depicts no clear age point , but more in terms of ' the important stages of life '. The character runs away from the panel that represents restriction ( on a subjective level ) but does not actually run away from the pressure . Eventually compromises under the pressure and put back on feminine wedding dress and walk into marriage . The running gradually turns into walking and the confidence disappears with it , and the second character ' s ' sigh ' expresses compromise and powerlessness under pressure from those around her . The ' people around me ' here implies the demands placed on women by the culture , also the real
