Charbonneau Arts Association By ERIC HOEM Time to get creative with fundraising In both of the last two years, the Charbonneau Arts Association has been able to raise $4,000 to donate to each of the art education HOEM programs at Canby and Wilsonville High Schools. As readers of this column understand, we have been successful due to great sponsors for our annual Charbonneau Festival of the Arts as well as to generous support for the silent auction we hold during the festival. This year because of the COVID-19 crisis, our prospects are understandably much lower. The day I wrote this article, I responded to a survey from the Oregon Cultural Trust, which asked what impact the pandemic would have on our fundraising. My response was that this year we could expect a major decline in both sources of fundraising, and that realistically, it would be cut by half or more. I felt disheartened as I considered the prospect. There are important demands on the flow of contributions to charitable organization like ours. We do not come ahead of food security and housing in a period of high unemployment. But we should not be ignored either. Students in our local high schools continue to need the best education our community can provide, and we believe that art programs play a significant role in a comprehensive education. What this comes down to for me is an opportunity to explore fundraising opportunities we have not needed in the past to augment our traditional sources. Last month I reported on developing a partnership with Wilsonville Festival of Art which we hope will expand the area we draw attendance from. That is a start, but how would it improve our prospects for equaling the fundraising of previous years? I had heard that there were programs where nonprofits could earn donations from companies we deal with every day. With a little research, I was pleased to find that there are two corporate programs we could start with immediately: Fred Meyer and Amazon. Corporate donation programs you can help with With your Fred Meyer Rewards cards, you can go to your online account, select “Community Rewards” on the left and then ask that contributions from the Fred Meyer Foundation related to your eligible purchases be made to “Charbonneau Arts Association.” This contribution does not detract from any of your benefits in the Fred Meyer Rewards program. A similar option exists at Amazon whereby a portion of your purchases will be donated to Charbonneau Arts Association. It is called AmazonSmile.
