STRAVINSKY RITE OF SPRING MOZART REQUIEM Marin Alsop has created a fascinating
program that mixes Russia’s Igor
Stravinsky with Germany’s Kurt Weill.
Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring
provoked a riot at its premiere in Paris in
1913 and ranks as one of the 20th century’s
most exciting scores. Fleeing the Nazi
takeover of their country, Weill joined
with playwright Bertolt Brecht to create
another Paris shocker in 1933 — their
satirical “ballet with songs,” The Seven
Deadly Sins, which will feature a dancer
and quartet of male voices. Making its BSO debut, the Percussion
Collective has most recently been
stunning audiences in Europe and Asia
and will perform Peabody professor
Christopher Theofanidis’ Drum Circles.
Also on the program is Mozart’s dramatic
Requiem, one of his greatest achievements
despite the fact that he didn’t survive to
complete it. Baltimore Choral Arts Society
will join Marin Alsop and the Orchestra for
this magnificent masterpiece. TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY

The New York Times has hailed conductor
Eun Sun Kim, the newly appointed Music
Director of the San Francisco Opera,
as “a major star.” Joining her is world-
renowned pianist André Watts, who
will perform Ravel’s demanding Piano
Concerto for the Left Hand, noted for
its expressively lyrical melody. Kim also
leads Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony,
widely considered his most beloved.
