André Watts Augustin Hadelich MAR 20 MAY 1 JUN 5 CHOPIN PIANO CONCERTO THIBAUDET PLAYS RAVEL Effervescent conductor Mario Venzago returns for a program of 19th-century classics including Rossini’s rousing William Tell Overture. Renowned French Canadian pianist Louis Lortie performs Chopin’s stunning First Piano Concerto, written when the composer was only 20. The program also includes Schumann’s most popular symphony, the sweeping “Rhenish” Symphony, with its unforgettable portrait of the imposing Cologne Cathedral overlooking the Rhine. The brilliant pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet returns to the BSO and shows off his phenomenal talent for mixing jazz with classical keyboard feats. Maurice Ravel’s love for George Gershwin’s music influenced his Concerto in G Major, a blend of French lyricism and jazz exuberance. Thibaudet pairs this with Gershwin’s vivacious “I Got Rhythm” Variations. Under Marin Alsop’s baton, the program also features Debussy’s sensuous Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Respighi’s spectacular Roman Festivals, a feast of kaleidoscopic color and sheer volume.
