WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results New safety-related facility and infrastructure projects were completed. Through a comprehensive technology improvement package, approved by the Board of Trustees, the District has installed state-of-the-art phone systems, security cameras, and visitor management systems at the District Office and all school sites. In addition, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices, which were installed at all secondary school sites. These AED devices have added another layer of safety for staff, students, and guests in the event someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Professional Growth We have strengthened our professional knowledge and skills around Safety and Wellness by providing training for the creation of Comprehensive School Safety Plans. District and school site leaders attended a compliance meeting to review changes and new legal requirements. After the compliance meeting, each site met with its School Site Council or Safety Committee to create and approve its plans. Local law enforcement was also involved in the creation and approval process. Social and Emotional Learning For its third consecutive year, the Districtwide Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Advisory Council continued establishing its vision of creating “Walnut Well” students where every student is Socially Aware, Emotionally Secure, and Learning Joyfully. The SEL vision informed site based SEL committees to launch initiatives to infuse SEL strategies with staff and students. During the 2019/2020 school year, four schools implemented a wellness area where students can have access to resources and personnel to self-regulate and manage their emotions. We now have seven school sites (elementary, middle, and high schools) dedicating a physical space for the wellness of students. Diamond Bar High School’s SEL Committee transformed its staff lounge area into a wellness lounge for staff to connect with others and find resources for SEL in one place. The SEL Council’s work continues to influence the implementation of classroom wellness activities that support students’ self-regulation of their emotions, including the use of mood meters, coping strategies, and alternate means to regulate their emotions. Two integral teams that support SEL integration continued to meet this year. The Counselors’ Network provided time and opportunities for K-12 counselors to collaborate and align practices in academic, guidance, and mental health counseling. The Counselors’ Network received training on threat assessment from Psychologist Rob Coad. The Crisis Response Team continued to provide support and on-site counseling whenever a school was dealing with a tragedy or crisis. Future Focus: • Continue to share classroom SEL best practices and implement SEL strategies into classes, including a dedicated time for SEL activities across sites • Continue SEL training for Child Care and Preschool Program staff 58
