Introduction:
Build Trust and Respect
Stephen Covey, famed author and expert on leadership and relationships, penned, “Trust is the
glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational
principle that holds relationships.” Our District continued to keep trust as the “glue of life” that
sustains healthy relationships across the organization. The score of successfully completed
actions and objectives demonstrate how the trust and respect of all stakeholders remained the
key ingredient to our District’s success.
Trust and respect are core principles that drive District leadership’s actions and behaviors. This
is evident in the leadership practices of our District administration and site leadership. This year,
Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor focused on growing the Outward Mindset of each Leadership
Team member. The Outward Mindset is a set of principles and guidelines developed by the
Arbinger Institute that enable individuals and organizations to look beyond self-focused
objectives, and into more others-inclusive approaches.
Outward Mindset training and book studies occurred in meetings with the Leadership Team,
bargaining unit leadership, and Leadership Development Seminar team. Additionally, the
District utilized Outward Mindset practices in coaching and mentoring relationships between
District administration and site principals. Altogether, individuals and teams have strengthened
their trust and understanding of others in the organization, which in turn produces higher quality
collaboration.
Throughout the year, a variety of activities were organized and facilitated to strengthen
relationships amongst colleagues, and to build staff morale. At the District Education Center
(DEC), monthly socials were organized by divisions, including a welcome back-to-school football
themed tailgate, fall holiday pie and apple cider fellowship, and annual winter decorating contest.
