WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results
At our school sites, both certificated and classified staff members conducted a variety of teambuilding
activities, including, but not limited to, participating in escape rooms, renovation of the
“Chuck Wagon” staff lounge, engaging in a variety of social and emotional learning activities,
and conducting book studies to help shape school culture.
Trust in relationships is cultivated when people are recognized for their work and
accomplishments. To that end, principals and District staff have taken intentional steps in
celebrating the work of staff, including distributing weekly SHINE awards, writing a staff spotlight
in a site newsletter, giving “Cheers for Peers” at a staff meeting, and tweeting out note-worthy
accomplishments to name a few.
As well, the District continued its long-standing tradition of honoring classified employees
through monthly Cornerstone Awards presented at Personnel Commission (PC) Meetings. The
Board of Trustees and PC recognized Mr. Luis Del Real, Maintenance Worker III - Painter, as
the 2019/2020 Classified Employee of the Year.
This year, the Human Resources Division refined the selection process for determining a
Classified Employee of the Year. A selection committee, consisting of administrators, along with
a past Classified Employee of the Year, reviewed a series of criteria to nominate candidates for
Classified Employee of the Year to the PC. From there, the PC selected Mr. Del Real for
recognition as a worthy representative who best embodies the strength and spirit of our classified
employees.
Each school site celebrated the accomplishments of its site Teacher of the Year representative
at the annual Salute to Teachers event. The 2019 District Teacher of the Year Mr. Rich
Langham, Diamond Bar High School choir director (previously Chaparral Middle School), was
recognized amongst his county peers at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE)
Teachers of the Year celebration.
Board Awards for Superstar Students and Partners in Education continued to be a highlight for
the school site teams and the parents of students receiving the awards.
Developing and strengthening trust with our parents and students occurs when we create
meaningful experiences, opportunities to connect, and a voice in the District’s decision-making
processes. The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council created a forum for students to
articulate their ideas in improving their educational experiences. The Parent Leadership
Development Seminar served as a think tank for ideas and afforded parent representatives ,from
each site, to develop their leadership capacity. Finally, Community Clubs and parent interest
groups at all school sites maintained their strong presence, and continued providing support to
staff and students.
Building and sustaining trust with bargaining unit leadership continued to be a focus for the
District. Regularly scheduled interest and problem-solving meetings were convened with both
WVEA and CSEA leadership teams. Representatives from our Business Services and
Educational Services Divisions, along with our site principals, were invited to various meetings
throughout the year to provide perspective and expertise in their respective areas.
