WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results
● Diamond Bar High senior Tori Kwon took 1 st Place in the 2020 Korean American Day
Art Contest. Her “History in our Hands” piece displays someone knitting iconic symbols
in Korean history. She was awarded a $100 scholarship and plaque, and her art has
been published in a 2020 Korean American Day Art Calendar. Kwon’s artwork was
selected over 500 other entries. She was formally recognized, on January 11, at the
Korean Education Center in Los Angeles.
● Seventeen talented Diamond Bar High School instrumental music students have been
named to the All-State High School Honor Band. Students were selected, via recorded
audition, from over a total of 2,000 applicants throughout the State of California.
● Sixty-nine Diamond Bar High School musicians participated in live tryouts to earn spots
on the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association’s All-Southern
Honor Musical Groups. Fifteen hundred students from 300 schools tried out throughout
Southern California. The Brahmas are among the 280 selected musicians.
● Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools’ staffs, parents, and volunteers delivered
surprise lawn signs to all Class of 2020 seniors (DBHS – 706 and WHS – 588) on
Friday, April 24. The special recognition project was sponsored by the Walnut Valley
Educational Foundation.
● Diamond Bar High School Principal Dr. Reuben Jones, and class advisors and officers
recognized Prom Kings and Queens with surprise coronation ceremonies at their homes
on Saturday, April 25. Staff wanted to do something special for the teens after the “Night
of a Thousand Lights” Junior/Senior Prom was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Future Focus:
● Data Informed Instruction
o Continue to focus on participation and increasing test scores for low achieving
subgroups
o Identify more time during the school structured day for ongoing professional learning
and data analysis (we have been reverting to subbing teachers out)
o Continue professional development on data driven instruction for preschool teachers
o Broaden use of formative assessment to measure student learning progress
o Schedule interim assessments with a student-centered pacing plan
o Seek ways for continued growth in academic indicators
o Focus on strategies that will help students who fell behind during the school closures
