WVUSD: 2019/2020 Year-End Results ● Walnut Valley’s Science Olympiad Teams dominated the competition during the 2020 Los Angeles County Regional Finals, held February 22, at Rio Hondo Community College. Out of 39 middle school teams, Chaparral took 3 rd Place, followed by Suzanne in 4 th Place, and South Pointe in 5 th Place. In the high school division among 53 competitors, Diamond Bar finished with 3 rd Place and Walnut in 4 th Place. No other school district had multiple trophy-winning schools. All five schools qualified for the Southern California State Finals. ● Suzanne Middle School Principal Dr. Amy Smith has been named Middle Grades Principal of the Year in the ACSA Region XV Administrator of the Year Program. Dr. Smith has been a dedicated educator and administrator in Walnut Valley for the past 15 years. ● During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, South Pointe Middle School hosted a Color Run, on September 26, to raise funds, spread understanding, and honor 7 th grade student Bryon Yang who lost his battle with leukemia. The schoolwide campaign raised over $4,200 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. ● Vejar’s Giselle Cordova (2 nd grade teacher) pulled off the surprise of a lifetime for daughters Abigail and Hannah on August 26. During the schoolwide Homecoming Assembly, Giselle revealed that their father, Staff Sergeant Julio Cordova, had returned from a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan. ● Walnut High School mega-talented swimmer Justina Kozan capped one of the area’s most successful seasons by winning two gold medals at the FINA Junior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in August. The sophomore won the 200-Meter Individual Medley in 2 minutes 11.55 seconds. She was also part of the U.S. 4×200 Freestyle Relay Team that took the gold medal in a time of 7:55.49. Last spring, she won two individual titles and two relay sectional titles at the CIF-SS Swimming and Diving Championships. ● On December 7, Diamond Bar High School’s Science Olympiad Team took 1 st Place, out of 30 teams, at the 2019 Cerritos High School Invitational competition. Students competed in 23 events, encompassing a diverse range of scientific studies, finishing in the top 5 in 15 of the events. ● Diamond Bar High junior Emma Han has earned the title of Girls Golf CIF-SS Individual Champion. She is only the second golfer in the school’s history to achieve this monumental achievement. ● Walnut High senior Daniel Muñoz has been named to the All-State Honor Choir and is the first WHS student to be selected for all three honor choirs (Regional, All-State, and Western Division) in the same year. ● In his seventh season, Walnut High School’s Joe Khouzam (head basketball coach) achieved the most wins in the 51-year history of boys basketball on January 11. 19
