But not only did they win one, they won two of the three on offer! Toby Evans ran away with the Year 9 race in Gisborne, leading his team to victory in the three man event, and no sooner had the euphoria of that victory worn off than Kane Elms emulated the feat in the senior race. Cameron Potts in the junior race nearly made it a triple, just missing the win, finishing second. A trip to Whanganui for the Virginia Lake relay against the schools from the lower North Island saw them very close to the podium. The Year 9 team and junior boys teams were both 4th, while the senior boys finished 5th. The round Lake Rotorua relay, the ‘Ekiden’, saw two school six person teams compete, with the mixed team finished 2nd out of 200 teams. This team were Blake Campbell, Cameron Potts, Will Tidswell, Kane Elms, Rosemary Yorke and Katarina Topp-Sandvik. The boys team came a creditable 12th. Kane Elms continued his top form at the NZSS champs in Taupo, finishing 9th in the senior boys race. Toby Evans ran well for 27th in the Year 9 race, while Cameron Potts was best of the juniors, finishing 35th. After that performance, Kane was chosen in the NZSS team to compete against Australia on the Gold Coast. He ended up picking up a medal in the relay with his U20 NZ team mates. More success was achieved at the NZ club cross country champs held in boggy conditions in Wellington, where he finished third. It was a terrific year for cross country, thanks to coach, Richard Potts, who put together many training sessions for the team. Mr G Morrison Coach Earlier in the year, the ECNISS relays were held at Anderson Park, with four teams making the podium. The Year 9 team were run down in the last 150m to finish 2nd, as did the junior boys. Both senior boys team and girls team finished third. Kane Elms did fastest leg of the day. While Kane was in Australia, the ECNISS road race was being held at Frimley Park. This time it was Karsen Vesty’s turn to win in the Year 9 race, also leading the team to the three man road race victory. Poppy Kelly was best of the others, finishing second in the junior race, with her team missing out on the team win on a countback. 62
