Cycling Rani Williams, Lily Stephens, Jono Williams, Karsen Vesty, Toby Evans Road Cycling The finishing results for the individual race found Toby Evans obliterating the Under 15 Boys by 15 minutes and Owen bouncing back with a third in the same grade. Ella Leary placed second in the Under 15 girls and Rani Williams came 3rd in the Under 16 Girls. Lily Stephen’s raced for a second and while all this was occurring, Jono and Karson could be found in the hospital. Over the past years, the Havelock North cycling team has experienced some well-deserved success but also some unfortunate turns of event. Our best results came from the Hawke’s Bay Cycling Champs where we rode well and represented the school with pride. The Senior Boys Team (made up of Jono Williams, Toby Evans, Finn Bull, and Karson Vesty) went hard around the circuit, giving the Napier Boys team (the event winners) a run for their money, when out of nowhere, an unfortunate incident occurred. In the space of seconds, bodies were broken, dentists got busier, bikes became fold-ups, and the school cycling suits became rag worthy. The crash also made it impossible to continue the event for the boys team. Many other events took place over the year, but none were represented by as many riders from our school. Nice work Toby for coming 7th in the cycling nationals and competing also in mountain bike events. Mrs. A Vennell The Junior Girls Team (made up of Lily Stephens, Ella Leary, Rani Williams, and Halle Steedman) conquered the Team Time Trial Event and won 1st place. They worked well together and deserved a convincing victory. The girls team also did well to hold their composure, when halfway around the course, they had to pick their way through chipped teeth, blood, and bike debris. But to top off the day, because we like to go above and beyond at Havelock North High School, Owen Reid had to outdo the crash. So while everyone followed the cones and marshals’ directions, Owen decided to take a tiki tour of the outskirts of Havelock. He ended up going the wrong way. We have decided he needs to go to Geoff and ask for some orienteering tips. 63
