Each term we choose a relevant charity that we wanted to support. Not only do we have the fun of designing posters and spreading the word, but also choosing a theme that students can dress up in. Famine, which the charity World Vision received in order to help South Sudanese refugees. In Term Three we raised just under $800 for the Havelock North Voluntary Fire Service. This was part of a Havelock North wide ‘Paint the Town Red’, in which all schools took part as well as an awesome carnival at the Fire Station. We showed our support by dressing entirely in red. We were fortunate to have an old fire truck pay the school a visit during lunch. Lastly, in Term four we fundraised for the Hawke’s Bay SPCA with a relevant ‘animal dress-up theme’. The school has been supporting this particular charity for many years and it was our pleasure to continue the tradition. In Term one we raised money for ‘Relay for Life’ organised by the Cancer Society. The theme was pajamas allowing students to show off their favourite get-up! In the Relay for Life event held at the Hastings Sports Park, 76 HNHS individuals got involved. While students enjoyed other sideline events like the tug of war, the focus was on showing support and remembering those who fight or have fought cancer. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as being a leader, alongside Jonty Godfrey. We both agree that the experience has improved our ability to organise and communicate. Fortunately, our committee worked well and members enthusiastically contributed during meetings. If I were to repeat my year, I would like to fundraise via a bake sale and help the Breast Cancer Society with collections within the Village. In Term two mufti day proceeds went to the Starship Foundation which is a social-profit organisation that cares for young patients. We had a World Cup theme, where everyone was asked to dress in their favourite football colours. This term was a productive time for the committee as we also had a ‘Pink Shirt Day’ on the 18th of May to raise funds for The Mental Health Foundation who support anti-bullying. Our school also participated in the annual 40 Hour Famine. With support from Becca Hylton (the regional coordinator), we were able to brainstorm fundraising ideas from which we organised a movie night. An outstanding $1,500 was raised from our students during the 40 Hour Rebecca Jackson 39
