SKILL LEVEL : III - IV * Basic understanding of Processing is required .
CONCEPT : Dive into the possibilities of the computer ’ s extraordinary feats in our digital age . This course is ideal for students looking to expand their control animations and processing skills , and those wanting to use a micro controller such as Arduino . We work with Sublime Text 3 to edit code , and HYPE Framework . Throughout the week , we explore efficient production techniques with a final project of a real-time , sensor-driven animation .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use Sublime Text 3 , a sophisticated text editor for code , markup and prose . We also use HYPE Framework , a collection of classes that performs heavy lifting tasks while using a minimal amount of code writing .
ACTIVITIES : Students work with Arduino , breadboards , resistors , LEDs and a various array of sensors to bring a physical input of interaction in order to allow for control of objects on screen using processing . The instructor presents multiple methods to speed up production , and students participate in hands-on exercises and receive extensive one-on-one help . Our final project is a real-time , sensor-driven animation .
FACULTY : Joshua Davis is an award-winning designer , technologist , author and artist in new media , and is acclaimed for his role in designing the visualization of IBM ’ s Watson , the intelligent computer program capable of answering questions , for the quiz show Jeopardy . SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Immerse yourself in one of the most beautiful destinations in the Rockies , and learn more about harnessing the sense of place in your photographic practice . This workshop focuses on building a series of images around the city of Aspen , Colorado , and its inhabitants . There is a strong emphasis on engaging with and making photographic portraits of subjects and locations that are unfamiliar . We cover the construction of engaging portraits , the figure / ground relationship , the use of creative perspectives , and the decisive acuity required for spontaneous portraiture . The workshop ’ s main objective is to provide students with a technical and conceptual fluency that they may apply within their own practice .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital photography , digital printmaking and digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with a discussion of students ’ portfolios , during which each student receives personalized feedback and exercises for improvement . We study and discuss the precedent of successful portrait and place photographers , deconstructing varied examples to further our own work . Students are encouraged to break through the boundaries between themselves and their subjects as they work on their own project .
FACULTY : Richard Renaldi ’ s photographs have been featured in galleries and museums throughout the U . S ., Asia and Europe . He is represented by Benrubi Gallery in New York and Robert Morat Galerie in Berlin . Richard ’ s most recent monograph , Touching Strangers , was released by the Aperture Foundation in 2014 . With the ever-widening array of creative applications and an emerging practice of photographic interventions , the iPhone has also become a uniquely powerful and selfcontained editing tool . We explore how to make the most of your camera ’ s settings and introduce emerging applications to render the full and breathtaking potential of our images .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use iPhones and select camera apps to capture , edit and catalog images .
ACTIVITIES : We learn through demonstrations of emerging applications for the iPhone and spend the day using our iPhones to capture and edit images .
