CONCEPT : Realize the immense potential of your iPhone as a high-quality , accessible production tool , and apply its power to your storytelling skill set . As a master of the “ pocket filmmaking ” craft , the instructor guides students in this hands-on course that reveals the broadcast quality potential of your iPhone . From filming to video processing , effects , grading and editing , we cover it all . Learn how to master full manual control over your iPhone ’ s camera and discover your true inner storytelling capacity .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Our week is divided into key focus areas : iPhone storytelling , including inspirational stories on why this is the future ; lenses , lighting and looks , stability and motion , sound and microphones , including how to capture crisp , clean sound in all instances ; apps and accessories , interview secrets , and mastering slo-mo and timelapse modes .
ACTIVITIES : This course features a blend of instructional know-how so you can master the video recording capabilities of your iPhone , infused with frequent hands-on access and field shoots so you can experiment with a variety of creative techniques , lenses , microphones and accessories . All production is focused on our iPhones , and students create a mini-documentary throughout the course of the week .
FACULTY : Jason van Genderen is a globally-awarded short filmmaker who has built a creative career around filming on the iPhone . Founder of the Pocket Film Academy , Jason is a frequent lecturer at film festivals , colleges and a content creator for brands such as Apple Australia , Sony , Nokia and Nikon , among others . His accolades include Sundance London , Aspen Shortsfest and Tropfest NY .

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Investigate a camera ’ s ability to describe the space invisible to our eyes . In this provocative workshop , students explore ways of deconstructing space . Using multiple images , we break apart the view before us to create our own gestalt version in its place . We focus on creating new work in large format through a variety of exciting digital photography and printing techniques .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with digital photography , digital printing and a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop . We also use large-format digital printers to produce new work in a large format .
ACTIVITIES : The week is divided between field trips to capture new material , studio time and group discussions . Daily lectures , demonstrations and lots of hands-on lab work provide students with the opportunity to advance their skills .
FACULTY : Accra Shepp is a photo-based artist living in New York City . He has exhibited in the U . S . and abroad . His work is represented in such collections as the Museum of Modern Art , the Chicago Art Institute and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London . In 2008 , he appeared in a group show at Nelson Hancock Gallery in Brooklyn and a solo show at Gallery 138 in New York . In 1998 , he received a Fulbright Fellowship to Indonesia . Accra is on the faculty at Princeton University .

CONCEPT : Learn what it takes to express our complex identities , individual stories and internal landscapes through captivating self portraits that go way beyond today ’ s selfie culture . We explore different ways to turn the camera towards our self , and investigate how still lifes , collages or even found imagery can be used as an extension and expression of our personal narrative . We discuss the use of visual symbols , metaphors , gestures and poses , and how they can help us turn individual experiences into relatable , universal topics for a broader audience .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital photography , digital workflow and digital printmaking with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : Daily activities include lectures on artists who use portraiture and self portraiture as a way of storytelling , and an expression of their personal experiences . Each student works on an individual project and takes part in individual and group discussions , personal writings and short readings .
FACULTY : Originally from Germany , Birthe Piontek moved to Canada after receiving her MFA from the University of Essen in Photography . Her project The Idea of North won the Critical Mass Book Award 2009 , and was published as a monograph in 2011 . Her work has been exhibited internationally , in both solo and group shows , and has been has appeared in a number of international publications like The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker among others .
