Lighting the Portrait : from capture to output

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Take your portraiture photography to the next level under the guidance of two renowned digital photography pioneers in this hands-on workshop . Throughout the week , we work to achieve imagery that truly expresses your artistic vision via on-location shooting in addition to studio imaging and printing . Much of the class is dedicated to one-on-one instruction , ensuring that all individual questions and concerns are addressed .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students practice advanced portrait shooting techniques , natural and studio lighting tactics , editing and sequencing work . We explore in-studio fine art imaging workflow , color calibration , color management , advanced imaging techniques , output options , substrate choices , permanence issues and marketing art .
ACTIVITIES : We shoot on location with models at a variety of spectacular Colorado locales . Students also learn from short lectures outlining critical issues such as color management and workflow .
FACULTY : Greg Gorman is a Los Angeles-based fine art portrait photographer known for his portraits of film , television , sports and music personalities . His work has been featured in national magazines and award-winning advertising campaigns .

R . Mac Holbert is a photographer and fine art printmaker who has lectured widely on fine art digital printmaking . He is co-founder of Nash Editions , one of the world ' s first digital printmaking facilities focusing on photography .

Contemporary Landscape

CONCEPT : Explore the landscape surrounding Aspen , Colorado , thinking through various historical and contemporary approaches to landscape photography . The Rocky Mountain landscape is in constant seasonal flux , from day to evening , winter to spring . It also changes over the eons — tectonic plates collide pushing the crust of the Earth up creating epic mountain ranges and exposing geologic stratification . In this workshop , we examine all of the above through the lens , working toward individual projects and creating photographic images that express aesthetic , social , cultural , environmental and philosophical concepts relating to the landscape . We examine historical and contemporary approaches to landscape photography within the context of contemporary art and society .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with digital photography , digital printing and a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : Daily activities include field trips to various locations into the landscape surrounding Aspen , as well as presentations , short readings and discussions on the many ways historical and contemporary photographers approach the concept of landscape .
FACULTY : Barry Underwood is an M . F . A . graduate from the Cranbrook Academy of Art . He is currently Chair of the Photography and Video Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art . His work has been featured in numerous publications , and exhibited in a variety of contexts including art museums , university galleries , project spaces and commercial galleries .

CONCEPT : Discover or renew your creative spirit , and broaden the way you think about photography in this dynamic workshop . The course aims to help serious amateur or professional photographers reconcile practical and creative lives , to re-examine your own creative process exploring the narrative , aesthetic , and emotional aspects of image making , and find new paths to creative growth . Our goals are to help each student develop or refine a sense of personal style and to make serious amateur , fine art or commercial work more passionate and fulfilling .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with digital photography , digital printing and a digital workflow with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : Emphasizing simplicity , practical demonstrations , field trips , individual portfolio reviews and discussions centering on the work of both historically significant and little-known photographers , we try to refine our views on producing work and balancing the various aspects of a busy life . We discuss how to develop projects , exhibitions and the contemporary publishing world . Everyone is encouraged to bring a sense of humor and a sense of purpose .
FACULTY : Keith Carter has been called a " poet of the ordinary " by the Los Angeles Times , and is the recipient of the Texas Medal of Arts . His work is included in numerous private and public collections including the National Portrait Gallery , Smithsonian American Art Museum , San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the J . Paul Getty Museum . He holds the Endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Texas where he was awarded the University ' s highest teaching honors , the Regents ’ Professor Award and Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Prize .
