The Narrative Vessel

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Explore the intersection of form , function and narration as it pertains to expanding your ceramics practice . We investigate how a utilitarian object can be used as a means of narration . The instructor focuses on throwing and the combining of thrown and hand built forms to create functional vessels . Using basic wheel thrown parts , demonstrations cover a variety of altering and assembling techniques . This engaging workshop focuses on creating functional wares such as mugs , bowls , jars , pitchers and teapots , and students walk away with a collection of useful vessels at the end of the 2 weeks .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students have the option to work with stoneware or porcelain clay . We experiment by throwing , handbuilding , and combining parts and pieces . We explore many different surface treatments including drawing into wet clay , carving and stamping . Demonstrations cover glazing techniques and different surface decorations . Students finish their pieces with high-fire glazes and slips .
ACTIVITIES : Inspiration is provided through lectures , presentations and slide shows featuring historical and contemporary ceramics . Individual faculty time is available for each student .
FACULTY : Bonnie Seeman has received numerous awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award , a South Florida Cultural Consortium and two Florida Individual Artist Fellowships . Her international exhibits include Art Basel , Switzerland , Hong Kong and Miami ; and the World Ceramic Biennale , Korea . Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art .

Pottery : wood / salt / soda firing

CONCEPT : Embark on a journey of discovery from ideation to pot creation . This exciting course encourages students to focus on their own personal curiosities and explore the ideas , shapes and methods that have eluded or are new to them . Explore the sparking of ideas and making of functional pots . This workshop is one of discovery and risk taking . We formulate tests and learn about atmospheric slips while firing in wood , salt and soda kilns .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with wheel throwing and hand building pots with high-fire stoneware and porcelain . The course focuses on formulating tests of slips , applying slips and glazes to our pots , and learning about loading and firing wood , salt and soda kilns .
ACTIVITIES : Each day begins with a demonstration . We make a variety of pots and work collectively toward firing several kilns . Through fun exercises and plenty of individual attention , we set our own individual goals . Each student mixes a different slip to test in the different kilns .
FACULTY : Linda Christianson is a studio potter working in rural Minnesota . She exhibits her work internationally and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts , the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board . Her work is included in public collections and kitchens worldwide . She tries to make a better cup each day .

Gesture & Form : earthenware surface decoration

CONCEPT : Take a closer look at decoration methods specific to earthenware and low-temperature , electric kiln firing . After learning and experimenting with various mark-making techniques , students are encouraged to develop and apply their own visual language . Class discussions focus on the integration of surface treatment with form , as well as how to layer materials to create depth in an electric firing . Learn how make truly unique ceramic art in a workshop that caters to the curious .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use earthenware clay to make both pottery and tile , and cover making and using terra sigillatas , slips , underglazes and glazes . Drawing and painting methods are also emphasized .
ACTIVITIES : Demonstrations include throwing and trimming , making tile of all sizes , applying slips , sigillata , glaze , and various drawing and decorating methods . Students should expect discussions and exercises that facilitate the development of visual language , and should be open to discussion and conversation .
FACULTY : Mel Griffin makes ceramic murals , pottery and illustrations that address our relationship with the natural world . She received her M . F . A . from the University of Minnesota , and settled in Helena , Mont ., after working at the Archie Bray Foundation . Recent awards include the Society for Contemporary Craft ’ s 2011 Leap Award and NCECA ’ s 2014 Emerging Artist Award .
