SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Bring your ceramic craft to life in this hand building workshop that focuses on making figurative ceramic sculptures and hyper-realistic representational ceramic objects using the coil-building method . We explore using clay as a primary material , examining forms of realism and gaze ( e . g ., digital , external , internal , personal , political , isolated , desired , curious , gendered , filtered ). Readings , discussions , class lectures and exercises cover contemporary figurative artists as well as conceptual approaches to making and looking in regard to realism and the figure .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Large-scale coil building and alternative cold surfacing are demonstrated .
ACTIVITIES : Students learn from hand building demonstrations , readings and discussions , lectures and slide presentations of related contemporary artists . We also make flexible silicon molds , press molding , and use cold ( alternative ) surfaces on ceramics .
FACULTY : Ashley Lyon received an M . F . A . in Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University . Her work is shown nationally and internationally . Ashley was the Turner Teaching Fellow in Ceramics at Alfred University from 2012 to 2015 , and is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at New Jersey City University .

CONCEPT : Hone your ceramic skills and explore the art ’ s rich history alongside one of Japan ’ s leading contemporary potters , Takashi Nakazato . Joined by Fumiko Nagai , these renowned artists lead students in the making of Karatsu wares . The Karatsu pottery tradition in Japan dates back to late 1300 A . D ., and evolved from ancient Korean influences of pottery making . In 2017 , Takashi celebrates his 80th birthday and nearly 60 years of making domestic pottery and tea ceremony wares . Both Takashi and Fumiko guide students in the making of simple but elegant pottery shapes and forms . This one-ofa-kind course is not to be missed .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work with stoneware , porcelain , throwing and hand building with bisque fired wares . We also incorporate demonstrations of unique and specific methods of pottery making .
ACTIVITIES : Each day involves morning and afternoon demonstrations , with lots of work time .
FACULTY : Fumiko Nagai and Takashi Nakazato make functional wares and dishes for food and tea ceremony . Fumiko trained as an apprentice with Takashi and then served as his assistant for several years . Takashi comes from a long line of potters dating back to the 1370s . Takashi apprenticed with his father who was designated as a National Living Treasure .
Fumiko and Takashi travel worldwide to lecture , demonstrate and exhibit their pottery . Fumiko graduated from the International Christian University of Tokyo with a degree in liberal arts .

CONCEPT : Experiment , explore and expand your knowledge of functional pottery in this lively workshop . Students are encouraged to question tools , traditions and techniques with the aim of achieving greater freedom and expression in our pots . We focus on functional pottery through the unique lens of how we , as artists , set rules for ourselves — and when we should break them . Working with stoneware and porcelain , students learn through demonstrations , collaborations , hands-on practice and fun .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with stoneware and porcelain with high-fire glazes and slips , and explore sculptural building approaches . Beginning with the wheel , we extend our making to include multiple forming techniques . We fire in wood and soda kilns .
ACTIVITIES : Course structure includes demonstrations , collaborations , discussions , exercises and lectures on Monday , Wednesday and Friday , with individual work time on Tuesday and Thursday .
FACULTY : Mark Shapiro and Sam Taylor have been doing pottery projects together for over 25 years . They currently focus on potter-produced events . They have both taught many workshops nationally and internationally and are founding members of POW ! ( Pots on Wheels !). Mark edited A Chosen Path : the Ceramic Art of Karen
Karnes and is directing the Apprenticelines project . Sam collaborates with a diverse community in his firings at his Dog Bar Pottery . Both Mark and Sam are full-time studio potters in western Massachusetts .
