The Center for Advanced Mentored Studies at Anderson Ranch is a vital link in the education of emerging artists . Advanced students gain access to master faculty — top contemporary artists and educators — over a three-year period , providing rigorous inquiry and steady direction for their individual practice . Students gain the critical levels of knowledge and mentorship necessary to take the next , important steps of becoming serious contributors in their chosen fields . The program , which includes studio work , critical dialogue and critique offers artists the opportunity to expand the scope of their current practice as well as their ability to develop a critical eye regarding their work . Students meet once per year for a week-long workshop at Anderson Ranch . Students are expected to continue to work on a project ( or projects ) over a three-year period . In addition to the summer classes , participants engage in mid-year portfolio reviews as well as individual bi-monthly meetings online with faculty to discuss their ongoing work and progress . At mid-year , faculty conduct an online critique with the whole group .
CONCEPT : Embark on an immersive three-year journey designed to expand the scope of your clay knowledge and develop a critical eye regarding a rigorous studio practice .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use and work with materials , clays and firing temperatures with which they are comfortable . You also discuss strategies for clays and glazes with the instructors .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in an interactive , hands-on setting comprised of formal demonstrations , slide shows , group and individual discussions . Each student develops works with the faculty to establish a path and direction he or she would like to pursue .
FACULTY : Chris Gustin lives , works and produces art in his South Dartmouth , Mass . studio . He received his M . F . A . from Alfred University . He is a full-time studio artist making large-scale sculptural vessels and pots . Chris was recently inducted into the International Academy of Ceramics , and in 2016 , the American Crafts Council honored him as an Artist Fellow .

Randy Johnston has been working in clay for 40 years , and shares a studio with Jan McKeachie-Johnston where they enjoy their love of wood-fired kilns . He is a full-time studio artist after a long teaching career at the University of Wisconsin , River Falls . Randy received his M . F . A . from Southern Illinois University and is a two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant .
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Refresh your approach to ceramics in a fun and unique workshop that re-contextualizes techniques to reflect contemporary life . We explore traditional techniques of working in porcelain , and then reconsider how these techniques can make objects that reflect more modern times . Come prepared to explore personal expression by making parallels to pop culture , music , movies , books , anime games , political and social constructs , social media and the like . This workshop includes an element of trial and error , as it challenges you to work toward developing personal voice .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with cone 6 porcelain , underglaze and glaze . Students explore hand built or wheel thrown vessel-oriented mishima , sgraffito and wax resist techniques on a greenware .
ACTIVITIES : Individual studio work is primary . We begin the workshop with creative collaborative exercises and instructor demonstrations . As the week progresses , we incorporate more individual discussions , and impromptu group discussions on conceptual concerns are encouraged throughout the week .
FACULTY : Kevin Snipes is a studio artist currently located in Pittsburgh , Pa . He exhibits internationally and was a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2014 . He combines his love of drawing , constructing narratives and objects . Kevin ’ s work explores the underlying concepts of otherness .
