I have told you, that I am He, if you seek
Me, then let these go!
The first chorale, (from the hymn “Herzliebster Jesu”) draws an uncomfortable compar-
ison between Christ’s great suffering and humanity’s world of pleasure and self-interest.
The melody is by the famous Lutheran hymn-writer Johann Crüger (1598-1662)

I lived with the world in delight and joy,
and You had to suffer.
In agitated recitative, the Evangelist tells of an angry Peter striking out and cutting off
a man’s ear with his sword. He is restrained by the words of Christ, set in soft, arioso
style.The Chorale that follows (No.5) comes from Luther’s setting of The Lord’s Prayer.
