Da überantwortete er ihn daß er
gekreuziget würde. Sie nahmen aber
Jesum und führeten ihn hin. Und er trug
sein Kreuz und ging hinaus zur Stätte,
die da heißet Schädelstätt, welche
heißet auf Ebräisch: Golgotha. Evangelist
Then he delivered Him to be crucified.
They took Jesus and led him away. And
He carried His Cross, and went up to the
place that is called the Place of the
Skull, which is called in Hebrew:
Golgotha.
The next aria sees the bass soloist in momentary dialogue with an ‘angelic’ choir in an
exchange that seems to imply Bach’s view of the other-worldly significance of the crucifix-
ion: the death of Christ is also seen as the gateway for the life of humanity. The aria leads
to the telling of Christ’s anguished suffering on the cross, and the moment of his dying.
