This edition of the Safety Spotlight features a series of back to school topics to help you and your students gear up for a smooth transition from summer fun to an exciting and safe school year . We hope these tips help start important conversations and create best practices to keep you and your family safe . Watch each week for another edition of our Back to School Safety Series .
Talking Topics and Why It ’ s Important to Practice
Phone numbers and addresses These are the most important pieces of information that can be given in an emergency situation .
School bus safety and etiquette Enforce habits of making eye contact with the driver , never going behind a school bus , staying seated during travels and not distracting the driver with loud noises .
Safe travel routes to and from school Travel on sidewalks , crosswalks and with crossing guards . Wear bike helmets when traveling on wheels .
Meeting places for school pickup Find safe meeting places for pick up in good and bad weather conditions .
Stranger danger and “ safe homes ” Talk about strangers and identify “ safe houses ” of friends or family members on the school route .
Fire and weather drills Drills are necessary to practice and prepare students and staff in the event of an emergency . The drills will be loud for a period of time .
Being respectful and kind Help create an environment where all students feel safe and secure .
