Rules of the Roads
August, 2017
Parents and students are everywhere during the school year and it is crucial drivers
remain aware and cautious when traveling through neighborhoods and city streets.
We hope this information will be a reminder to follow the rules of the road not just
during the school year, but during all commutes. Please share this information with
all of the drivers in your household.
Driving Through Active School Zones
Active school zones require drivers to reduce their speed to posted limits and prohibits
cell phone use through zone. Reminder, effective September 1, 2017 texting and
driving will be against the law in Texas.
Pedestrian Safety in Neighborhoods and Crosswalks
Many children walk or ride a bicycle or scooter to school. While children should
follow the rules for their safety, drivers also need to do their part and take extra
precautions. These precautions include: not speeding in neighborhoods,
monitoring crosswalks for pedestrians and coming to a complete stop at all
signs and lights.
Manage Your Time, Do Not Make Unsafe Decisions
If you are running late, be late and plan differently the next time. Many accidents are
caused when drivers run late and try to rush through the busy streets of town.
Passing a School Bus May Be Illegal
Most streets in Southlake require drivers in BOTH directions to STOP when a school bus is picking
up or dropping off children. These are streets that do not have a physical barrier (i.e. a median)
separating the opposite side of traffic.
