WVUSD: 2016/2017 Year-End Results
Structured time for professional development continues to be planned and implemented by
sites. Prior to implementation, stakeholders meet to consider proposed revisions to the
students’ day, since schedule changes impact the Nutrition Services, Transportation, and Child
Care Departments.
The Personnel Commission has begun processes to update its current Rules and Regulations
starting with training by expert and California State Personnel Commissioners’ Association
(CSPCA) Executive Director George Cole, during a March 2017 Study Session.
To further develop the knowledge of stakeholders regarding the Walnut Valley Merit System,
Human Resources staff, Personnel Commissioners, and CSEA officers participated in the
CSPCA Merit Academy. This training provided detailed information about the Merit System
and the CSPCA Model Rules and Regulations. The Merit Academy is a rigorous series of full-
day trainings held on Saturdays over a period of five months. In addition to attendance at the
Merit Academy in January 2017, a Personnel Commissioner and some Human Resources staff
attended the annual CSPCA Conference in San Francisco. The conference included
professional development relating to classification and reclassification studies, as well as
Human Resources operations.
A Classification Study of five job families (Transportation, Nutrition Services, Security,
Purchasing/Warehouse, and Technology) was completed in February 2017. A Reclassification
Study, based on employees’ approved application, was also completed. Both studies resulted
in salary range and job description adjustments for approximately 200 classified employees.
Each year, WVUSD holds numerous events to recognize excellence among employees. At
the annual “Welcome Back” celebration, long-time employee and supporter of Walnut Valley,
Ray McMullen, spoke to all staff about the origins of the District and the steps that took place
to build it over its 46-year history.
The Cornerstone Awards Banquet was held in February at the Pomona Valley Mining
Company. A full venue of attendees celebrated twelve classified employees who received
Cornerstone Awards during 2016. Former electrician and current Diamond Bar High School
Operations Manager, Mike Bromberg, was named Classified Employee of the Year.
The Teacher of the Year Awards Program (Salute-to-Teachers) was hosted at Walnut High
School. The District’s Teacher of the Year, Frank De Anda, was recognized at the event and
at the September 2016 Los Angeles County Office of Education Teacher of the Year Luncheon.
A Retirement Recognition program was held at Ron Hockwalt Academies/HARTT with
excellent attendance by retirees and celebrants. The Beginning Teacher Support and
Assessment Program (BTSA) held its 18 th Annual BTSA Induction Colloquium at the Royal
Vista Country Club. The Walnut Valley Administrators Association (WVAA) nominated and the
Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) presented awards to District
Administrators to recognize their contributions to WVUSD. Employee celebrations at the
District Office included the Fall Harvest Festival, the Winter Holiday Celebration, and the Spring
Luau. These events were well attended and employee morale was boosted through
entertainment, activities, competitions, and great food.
