SSS COLLABORATIONS AND SERVICE
The National Museum of African American
History & Culture (NMAAHC)
During Spring Break, TRiO SSS, TRiO SSS
STEM & Health Sciences, TRiO Teacher Prep,
and the African & African American Studies
department partnered for a trip to
Washington D.C. 19 students and 6 staff
members flew into D.C. for a 2 day trip to
visit the National Museum of African
American History & Culture. Students spent
one day exploring D.C. and the second day
exploring the Museum and Historical
Monuments in the area.

Service to the Campus and Community
This year SSS students were able to participate in In
house and community service. Students did
everything from making cards for the elderly during
Valentines Day to spending a few hours at Kids Food
Basket preparing suppers for after school programs.
This year we had over 60 students participate in
service activities and had 2 Community Service
opportunities and 3 in house service activities.

Steelcase Career Night
Students from TRiO SSS along with TRiO SSS
STEM & Health Sciences had the opportunity to
visit Steelcase in Grand Rapids, MI. During this
experience, students were able to talk with a
panel of employees who were all under 40 and
many were GVSU alumni. They received a tour
of the educational and working facilities, as well
as met one of the CEO’s who gave them an
i m p r o m p t u i n t e ra c t ive s e s s i o n o n n e w
technology they are working on for classroom
engagement based on furniture structure.
Students and staff went to dinner at Kobe
Japanese Steak & Seafood restaurant in which
one of the Steelcase employees accompanied the
students for a debrief.
