GRADUATE AND CAREER EXPLORATION
OHIO 2016
SETTING LONG-TERM GOALS CAREER/GRADUATE EXPLORATION
Part of being successful in college stems from setting long-term
goals. By beginning with the end in mind, it becomes easier to
make decisions that move you along your desired path. For
many of our students, this includes applying for and being
admitted into graduate school. In order to explore the graduate
school application process, TRiO SSS spent a day on Ohio State
University’s campus. Dr. Donald Mitchell Jr of the College of Education and Dr.
NyKia Gaines of TRiO SSS STEM and Health Sciences
accompanied students to discuss and dissect myths, truths, and
advantages to graduate degrees. Students were given time to ask
questions, receive insight on their future journeys as well as
learn more about their specific interest in the application
process.
EDUCATION CONNECTION IMPACT - Being accompanied by Dr. Donald Mitchell Jr. and
Leaving Thursday evening, students rode a bus from the
Allendale campus to Columbus, Ohio. Early Friday morning,
students participated in an interactive discussion, panel and a
walking campus tour. This trip was extremely beneficial as each
department that students were interested in took them on a
personal tour of their facilities and gave them one on one time
while on campus. Representatives were on hand to explain the
application process and what a day in the life of a graduate
student is like. This first-hand experience helped TRiO SSS
participants understand what it takes to be successful in
graduate school. Dr. Nykia Gaines gave the students a realistic view of the future.
They were able to build connections with two faculty members
on campus that they may not have been able to interact with
otherwise. Some students now have a mentor and resource
through the both of them as they continue their educational
journey and that gives many of them hope as well as potential
for future recommendations.
APPRECIATING HISTORY
Saturday afternoon students enjoyed a private lunch at TRIO
Bistro in Cincinnati Ohio. Following lunch, students toured the
National Underground Railroad Museum, where they were able
to step back into time and travel through a rich history of the
African Diaspora. Students gave feedback on to how impactful
this experience was for them.
CITY CULTURE
Students were able to explore the city each evening, being
dropped off in downtown Columbus as well as near Ohio States
campus. Students explored the Easton Town Center Mall on
Saturday evening. There were several festivals while we were in
the city including the Polish festival in which students had the
option to explore the food and festivities associated with the
festival. Pictured above (left) in Cincinnati students were able to
view the entire city from the third floor of the
museum in which they decided on a photo

opportunity with the city view behind them.
