Tennis had a smashing start to the year. Sign ups for
tennis occurred early in term 1 and with an
enthusiastic group of students ranging from year 9
through to year 13 wanting to play. The school formed
a senior boys, junior boys and junior girls team. Each
week the teams faced opposition from different schools
around the Hawkes Bay. Every team member played a
singles g ame following by a doubles match.
The senior boys team comprised of Hamish Lee, Ben
Waddington, Zahn Phillip, Angus McMillian, Leo
Williams, Christian Resag and Matthew Knowles, who
had a very successful competition beating all of their
opposition and winning the grade. Members of this
team also travelled as part of the school team to the
Tawa exchange.
The junior boys team faced more challenging
competition with a combination of wins and losses.
However, with a team who was keen to improve and
always did their best they managed to finish at the top
of the points table. This team included Alexander
Phillip, Yuto Kuki, Tom Klingender, Blake Fullerton,
Guy Reeves and Lochie Hulena.

The girls also did us proud and won their division. This team was made up of both year 9 and 10 girls. These girls
included Sophie Hooper, Marleen Slabberkoorn, Caitlin Gregory, Jasmine Roydhouse-Ross, Ana Rathbone and
Claudia Ward. The students also took part in fortnightly coaching sessions run by Luke Donovan. It was great to
see their skills and understanding of the game develop during these lessons. As we head into to the term 4
tennis season we look forward to seeing our five junior teams experience positive results in their new
competition.
With the death in Pandora Pond the previous week,
and a ‘rahui’ placed on the scene, the annual HBSS
team triathlon became a duathlon with three athletes.
Without the swim, teams had to be altered to include
another runner. HNHS tasted success in the junior
mixed grade and their performance was so good, they
actually were the third junior team to finish, and that
was with two females in the team. Aishlin McIntyre
was lead off runner, while Lewis Sheeran cycled the
14km leg and it was left to Jenna Tidswell to finish it
off for the team. The senior boys’ team were beaten by
7 seconds in an enthralling race. Joel Engelke was lead
off runner, and finished his 3km leg in second place
behind Lindisfarne. Nick Kelly did the 21km cycle leg,
but it was Karamu, who had a nationally ranked cyclist
in their ranks, who returned in first place, with Rudolf
Steiner in second and HNHS in third, 1:45 down on the
leader.
