A great 4.5km leg for Sean Morrison, reeled in the leader, and with about 800m to go, it looked like he was
going to catch him. The Karamu runner found an extra bit of energy and hung on for dear life for the win.
HNHS did very well at the HBSS individual triathlon. Todd Burnard (senior), Abbie Lochhead (senior) and
Jenna Tidswell (junior), all finished second in the wet conditions, while Sean Morrison finished third in senior.
The Year 13 Physed class had 15 participants taking part, with all of them completing the event, which included
a 750m swim, a 21km cycle and a 4.5 km run. Todd was fastest in 1 hr 7 min.
There is a small but dedicated band of Golf Croquet players
at Havelock North High School who enjoy regular games at
Heretaunga Croquet Club on Napier Road. New players are
always welcome.
Golf Croquet continues to grow as a sport at secondary
school level thanks to Croquet NZ’s Junior Development
Programme. Havelock North High School has two students
who have been selected for this national programme: Connor
Parkhill in Year 10 who is a member of the NZ Under 21 Development Squad, and Jez Reeves in Year 11, who is in the NZ
Under 21 Squad. Jez received an exciting late call-up to the
New Zealand Under 21 team and flew down to Christchurch
in February to compete in the World Under 21 Golf Croquet
Championships, taking on the top Under 21s from Australia,
the UK and Egypt.
Jez and Connor made up the HNHS doubles team for the
National Secondary Schools Finals in March this year. There
were 24 teams competing in Palmerston North, against
opposition that included several national champions.
HNHS took some time to work out their best strategy, losing three early games. They then settled down and
played magnificently, beating the top-ranked team in the competition and being undefeated from then on.
Their early losses, however, relegated them to the 5th/6th playoff, where they had a decisive victory over Mt
Hutt College.
