Once again football here at HNHS, has had a
productive year.
Not only did we have four senior boys’ teams, but four
junior boys’ team and four girls’ teams. which just
shows how this is such a strong sport here at school.
The 1st XI boys team has gone through a lot this year,
and they are a clear example of how players will just
soldier on. The team started off the season with a
few players sadly leaving and Logan Bensenmann
breaking his leg. And again this would not be the last
broken leg for the season.
all of this meant that coach Murray Painter would
have to call upon members of the 2nd XI and the
Junior A boys’ teams.
Tournament was a bit up in the air for the boys for
a while, but with some teams pulling out of the local
tournament the boys were back in. The boys had a
good tournament and had some good results. But
once again next year will be another rebuilt year.
Junior A Boys’
We had a good year this year with 8 wins and 4 losses
scored 58 goals and conceded 21 to finish in 3rd place
overall behind NBHS and Lindisfarne both of whom
we won one of each of the two times we played them.
We had a relatively injury free season and I put that
down to the hard work the boys put in during the season to keep themselves fit which really showed when
we went to central six in Palmerston where again we
came third. Captained by Brad Calder and ably assisted by Liam Shackleton and Will Kimber the team
really grew through the season and had some great
results. These same three boys regularly turned out
for the 1st II on Saturday as well. Weather rarely affected games or training and there were always plenty
of laughs and a strong turnout week after week. Highlights for me this year would be Will Kimber’s three
cheers at the end of the games, central six in Palmerston with full sun and no wind…. In Palmerston!!!
Our second half performances that showed focus and
determination. Opposition coaches complimenting
on us playing as a team and playing attractive football
and finally being able to coach a great bunch of young
men, standing up this year instead of from a wheelchair.
Cheers Paul Callaghan
