Carol Rimmer Mrs Rimmer joined the staff in 1979, where she initially taught fabrics which has now turned into soft materials. She has had many roles here hat Havelock High, including HOD Technology, House Tutor, Form Tutor, and Head of House. But for the last 10 years she has been a strong member of Kauri House. And has a large number of blue items in her classroom. She has had a large about of in-put into the Technology curriculum and the development of technology changing from the old “Wood work and cooking”. Mrs Rimmer has been on many panels, committees and development teams. She has had a huge impact on the subject in New Zealand and here at Havelock North High School. In the last few years she has shown just how strong of a person and women she truly is, as she has recovered from cancer. She will be greatly missed by her Tachnology family. Brian Pereira Mr Pereira joined the staff in 1979, where he initially taught history, geography and social studies. Eventually he focused on teaching history in the senior school and social studies at year 10. He has especially enjoyed the opportunity to work with able students who have shared his passion for historic events. In Mr Pereira’s view, the subject of history is even more important now than it has been in the past. This is because it allows students to evaluate evidence, to question information and to reach their own conclusions. He has been a member of Rata House for all of his time here which is an enviable record, given Rata’s frequent successes in the Patu competition. Mr Pereira also worked for 25 years as the coordinator for Community Education. Under his watch the number of courses available to our community grew from just six up to about seventy-five. Mrs Orton Mrs Orton has been a member of our staff since joining Havelock North High School in 1987. Initially she taught History of Art to the seniors and junior English. However, it was not long before she became the specialist teacher of Classical Studies at years 12 and 13, supported by year 10 Social Studies classes. It was these classical studies lessons that provided Mrs Orton with the opportunity to share her personal passion for Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman studies. Top students have appreciated the opportunity to engage in higher level discussion, to interpret Greek and Roman literature and to share the fascination of these times in history. Her knowledge and skills as a teacher have been reflected in the many Scholarship passes gained by her students. National recognition of this saw Mrs Orton acknowledged by being awarded a prestigious Woolf Fisher scholarship in 2014. Phil Parry Phil Parry has taught at HNHS for thirty years. He is a well-known for his good humour. In his time at our school Phil has taught Technology (metal), DVC (Graphics) , Health and Physical Education as well as being a popular form tutor and Miro house tutor. Mrs Jill Gray As the school year comes to a close, Havelock North High School farewells another experienced mathematics teacher. Mrs Gray puts a close on 43 years of continuous service, 25 of these years at Havelock North High School. During her time here, Mrs Gray has taught mathematics to years 9 through to 13, been Head of Tainui House, involved with Te Waka Awhina and she has been heavily involved with the teacher’s union, PPTA. She has been responsible for the coursing of years 9 and 10 students and organising the junior prizegiving. Mrs Gray will be remembered by the students as a caring and down to earth teacher. Her sense of humour, patience and experience will be missed. She has been a great form teacher offering guidance and enjoying many laughs with many students over the years. The staff will miss her early morning wit at staff briefings, her advice and friendship. We wish you an enjoyable retirement Jill and thank you very much for all your years of service. l l e w Fare and Good Luck
