NZSS Triathlon Champs
Jenna Tidswell was the only representative from the school at the NZSS Triathlon Champs held in Gisborne. She performed creditably, finishing 18th,
making up ground after falling behind in the swim in heavy seas in the
triathlon and 12th in the Aquathon (a combo of swimming and running).
Tremain’s Corporate Team Triathlon
Two Year 9 HNHS students were part of the winning female team at the
Tremain’s Corporate Triathlon. Teaming up with CHBC swimmer, Maggie
Franks, the team got up to win by the narrowest of margins when cyclist,
Jenna Tidswell, held on after a strong ride from her nearest opponent, to
win by a narrow 7 seconds after over an hour of racing. Maggie started
well and lead out of the water by 12 seconds, but it was a fine run from
Aishlin McIntyre who created the buffer required to enable Jenna to bring
the team home on the bike.
HBSS Team Champs
Five teams represented the school in the HBSS Team triathlon Champs held at Pandora Pond, Napier. The windy
conditions meant the cycling legs of the juniors was reduced from two laps to one, while seniors were from three laps
to two. The dismal evening was complete when the rain set in half way through the seniors’ race. The junior girls team,
comprising of all y9’s, Grace Jones (swimming), Jenna Tidswell (cycling) and Aishlin McIntyre (running), was the best
performed of the teams, finishing 3rd. The reduced cycle hurt this team, as Jenna, was second quickest on the bike,
and without the extra 7 km, would have made the difference between 2nd and 3rd. Our other Y9 girls team of
Olivia Wolland, Maggie Brunton and Laura Somerville finished 10th.The senior girls also performed wi th credit, finishing
5th out of 17 teams. Alexia Hinton (swim), Abbie Lochhead (cycle) and Jess Ford (run) were team members, and it
was an excellent cycle from Abbie that got them into a competitive position. The senior boys’ team were 6th in a very
competitive field, the team being Todd Burnard (swim), Nic Kelly (cycle) and Sean Morrison (run). Nic rode very well
to have 4th fastest time in very poor conditions. Our junior boys team did not have the most ideal preparation, their
cyclist pulling out on the day. It meant, with the substitute, there was two runners, and one had to draw the short straw
to cycle. They ended up in 8th place, with the team ending up as Joseph Belcher (swim), Joel Engelke (cycle) and
Richard Russell (run).
