The elder that I met was Minnie Lee Rogers . She was from Brooklyn , New York but moved to Newport News , Virginia to get a better job . She worked as a nurse and occasionally in a nursing home . She did not graduate high school . She had 3 children , 9 grandchildren and 3 great grand children . She did not have any siblings and she was married twice . I asked Mrs . Rogers what advice would she give children my age she said , “ graduate high school and college and listen to your parents .”

I learned quite a few things from my elder . Some information about traveling and even some life lessons . My elder was Captain Gantt , a Veteran pilot in the Navy , current high school teacher and volunteer counselor at Hampton University ’ s summer programs . The most important lessons I learned from my elder is not to be selfish and help other people out .
