The elder that I met was Minnie Lee Rogers. She was from Brooklyn, New York but moved to Newport News, Virginia to get a better job. She worked as a nurse and occasionally in a nursing home. She did not graduate high school. She had 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grand children. She did not have any siblings and she was married twice. I asked Mrs. Rogers what advice would she give children my age she said,“ graduate high school and college and listen to your parents.”

I learned quite a few things from my elder. Some information about traveling and even some life lessons. My elder was Captain Gantt, a Veteran pilot in the Navy, current high school teacher and volunteer counselor at Hampton University’ s summer programs. The most important lessons I learned from my elder is not to be selfish and help other people out.
