The young horses of the show horse world turned out in force as 34 entries came through the big gate to vie for the World Championship. When the judges had made their decision, only 16 horses were left in the ring and the winning number was DELIGHT’ S RED SHADOW, a great two-year-old superbly ridden by veteran showman Charlie Bobo, who received the Trainer of the Year Award later in the evening. The reserve horse, who missed being champion by just a fraction, was DELIGHT’ S ADONIS. John T. Carter up. John T. and his colt never let up. Third were MASTER COPY and soft-spoken Russell Pate, whose usual fine ride couldn’ t quite edge out the top two horses.

What these horses lacked in size, they made up up for in determination and ability as 22 ponies competed for the title. The judges selected 14 ponies for the final judging with SCAT MAN’ S KITTY KAT and Steve Hawkersmith being adjudged the winners. Steve is an accomplished rider and he used his ability wisely in winning this class. The reserve champion was MISTER SANDMAN, with Terry Vinson riding. This relatively unknown team made themselves known to the judges with a fine performance in three gaits. Rounding out the top three was Priscilla Talley riding EAGLE’ S ACE. They received one first-place vote, but had to settle for third.

The capacity crowd of 25,872 was treated to a top class even though the torrential rains began to fall. Burl Daugette and MOONGLOW. JR. won their second straight World Championship in impressive fashion, placing at the head of all three judges’ cards. This great team defeated 27 entries after the judges selected 16 for final judging. The reserve champion was HURRY SUNDOWN and Patti Reams, placing second on all Judges’ cards. This team came on strong and impressed observers with their excellent show. EBONY’ S DOLLY and Janie Julian Beech kept getting better to win the yellow ribbon for third place.
