How an independent electricity provider is trailblazing community benefit by giving customers a choice in energy
Pioneer Community Energy is Placer County ’ s — and soon El Dorado County ’ s — customer-owned provider of reliable and competitively priced electricity . A not-for-profit partnership between the two counties and the incorporated areas of Auburn , Colfax , Lincoln , Loomis , Placerville and Rocklin , Pioneer serves more than 93,300 residential and commercial accounts . The independent utility company will grow to approximately 160,000 accounts starting in 2022 when it expands into unincorporated El Dorado County and Placerville .
Pioneer ’ s commitment to customers
goes beyond public safety , stable rates and keeping the lights on . Known for a commitment to community benefit and exceptional customer service , Pioneer was formed to be an alternative to PG & E and to maintain local choice in power procurement while offering programs that reduce energy consumption , greenhouse gas emissions and develop renewable energy jobs to strengthen the local economy .
PIONEER OFFERS FIRST 100 % RENEWABLE ENERGY OPTION In June 2021 , Pioneer announced the rollout of Green100 , a new 100 % renewable energy option for business and residential customers .
“ When members of our communities began asking Pioneer for electricity produced from 100 % renewable sources , we brought them Green100 ,” says Jim Holmes , member of the Placer County Board of Supervisors and chair of the Pioneer Governing Board . “ We launched Pioneer to give our communities a choice in electricity providers , and now we can give them a choice in electricity products .”
Green100 renewable resources may include geothermal , wind , solar , hydroelectric and biomass . Residents and businesses interested in reducing their carbon footprint can sign up for Pioneer ’ s Green100 program anytime .
“ The Green100 rate gives businesses and municipalities another tool to use to meet state carbon reduction requirements ,” says John Hidahl , member of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and the Pioneer Governing Board . “ With this new option , Pioneer Community Energy becomes the only source for ratepayers looking for electricity produced from 100 % renewable resources .”
Pioneer always supports the right to choose . Enrolling in Green100 is completely voluntary and may help building owners seeking LEED certification .
